Looking for a smoothie that’s refreshing and loaded with nutrients? This baobab super smoothie blends tropical fruits with creamy yogurt, zingy ginger, a little bit of turmeric and a generous scoop of nutrient-rich baobab powder. It tastes delicious, is very aromatic, and provides a natural boost of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants. Amazingly invigorating, it’s perfect for a feel-good, super energized start to your day.
Why you should add baobab powder to your smoothie
Baobab powder is made from the dried fruit of the baobab tree, and it’s an exceptional natural source of fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin C. Just a spoonful of this superfood powder gives your smoothie a subtle citrusy flavor and a powerful nutrient boost:
- Vitamin C – Baobab has up to 6–10 times more vitamin C than oranges.
- Fiber – Around 50% of the powder is dietary fiber (both soluble and insoluble), which supports digestion and helps balance blood sugar. It keeps you feeling full.
- Minerals – Naturally packed with calcium, potassium, and magnesium.
- Polyphenols – Plant compounds with anti-inflammatory effects, linked to heart health and gut health.
- Prebiotics – The fiber in baobab feeds your gut’s good bacteria, improving digestion and nutrient absorption.
I’m convinced baobabs are the most magical trees on the planet. Want to know what baobab recipes we’ve been whipping up? Just a little bit of everything! We’ve sipped on homemade baobab juice, snacked on gluten-free baobab energy bars, and rolled more than a few healthy baobab bites (they’re too pretty not to). For dessert, baobab ice cream and lemon baobab cookies have completely stolen the spotlight. And because we couldn’t resist those magnificent giants, we roasted the seeds too – to make some rich, nutty baobab coffee.
What you need to make it and what you get
These are the ingredients you’ll need:
BAOBAB POWDER – Adds all the goodness of baobab, and a tangy kick. We used homemade baobab fruit powder from a local market, but you can find it in most health food shops. Just make sure it’s the pure stuff, not overly processed, so you’re actually getting the good vitamins and minerals baobab is known for.
BANANA – Adds natural sweetness and makes the smoothie filling. It’s also loaded with potassium and magnesium. If you want a low-carb smoothie, skip it.
MANGO – Creamy, tropical, and packed with vitamins A and C to brighten up both the flavor and nutrition.
ORANGE – Fresh and zesty, it brings another big hit of vitamin C and a refreshing citrus note.
YOGURT – Makes the smoothie creamy while adding protein, calcium, and probiotics for gut health.
FRESH GINGER – Spicy and warming with natural anti-inflammatory properties that also help your digestion.
TURMERIC – Earthy and vibrant, known for being rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.
HONEY (optional) – A natural way to sweeten up your super smoothie, plus it comes with antibacterial benefits.
How to make super baobab smoothie with ginger
STEP 1: Start with the ginger. The easiest way to peel it is by scraping the skin off with the edge of a spoon, though a small paring knife works too. Once peeled, grate it finely — this way it blends right in and you won’t get any surprise chunks in your smoothie.
STEP 2: Next up, the fruit. Peel your orange, banana, and mango. Cut them into smaller chunks so they blend more evenly. Add all the fruit to your blender, then spoon in the yogurt, drizzle in the honey, and sprinkle over the baobab powder, grated ginger and turmeric.
STEP 3: Blend everything on high speed until smooth and creamy. Depending on your blender, this might take a minute or two — you want it perfectly silky with no bits left behind. Pause for a quick taste test. If it needs a touch more sweetness, add another drizzle of honey and blend again for a few seconds.
STEP 4: And that’s it! Pour your baobab smoothie into a glass (the recipe yields just enough for two large, tall glasses) and enjoy it right away while it’s fresh.
If you’ve got baobab powder left, put it to good use! Try making quick, healthy baobab balls (ready in minutes) or whip up some gluten-free baobab bars to snack alongside your smoothie. We don’t mind having a cup of baobab coffee and citrusy lemon baobab cookies for breakfast either!
Tips to adjust your super baobab smoothie
Go vegan. Swap the yogurt for a plant-based version like coconut or almond yogurt. It keeps the smoothie creamy while staying 100% dairy-free. Or you might want to try out our baobab juice with coconut milk?
Skip the sugar.. Leave out the honey and either add a natural sweetener or nothing at all — the orange and mango bring plenty of sweetness on their own.
Make it low-carb. Leave out the banana and honey, and use coconut milk instead of yogurt. The result is rich, creamy, and still absolutely delicious.
Boost the protein. Add a spoonful of nut butter or a scoop of protein powder to turn this into a more filling smoothie that doubles as a post-workout snack.
Make it more tangy. A squeeze of lemon works beautifully with baobab’s citrus notes and brightens up the flavors of both mango and orange.
Get in those omega-3s. Stir in some chia seeds. Just know they’ll thicken the smoothie, so you might want to splash in a bit more liquid (or ice cubes) to keep it drinkable.
Add greens. Toss in a handful of spinach or kale for extra nutrients like magnesium. The fruit flavors easily balance out the greens.
No fresh ginger? No problem — use a pinch of ground ginger instead. It’s stronger, so go easy at first and adjust to taste.
Storage
Made more than you can drink? No problem — baobab smoothies store well if you do it right.
In the fridge: Keep your smoothie in an airtight jar or bottle. It stays fresh for up to 24 hours, sometimes 48 if sealed well. A thin layer of lemon juice on top helps slow oxidation and adds extra vitamin C.
In the freezer: Pour into single-serve containers or ice cube trays. Or even better, transform it into baobab ice cream! It will last for up to 3 months. One thing I always add to it is a tablespoon of fresh-grated ginger.
Baobab smoothie with ginger FAQs
The recipe calls for two tablespoons of baobab powder, but your smoothie can handle more if you like. In places where baobab trees grow, people happily scoop it in by the handful every day — and it’s all good. Just keep in mind, the more baobab you add, the tangier your smoothie will taste.
You can usually find baobab powder in health food stores, natural markets, or online – you’ll find plenty of African sellers of baobab fruit pulp and powder on Etsy. If you want something quick and easy, you can grab it right from Walmart. Just make sure you’re getting pure baobab powder with no fillers, so you get all the nutrients, too.
Absolutely! Frozen fruit works perfectly. Just toss the baobab powder, yogurt, ginger, turmeric and honey together with the frozen fruit in the blender, pulse for a few minutes, and you’ve got a refreshingly cold smoothie, great for hot summer days.
No, baobab powder has a low glycemic index, which means it won’t cause a spike in blood sugar. In fact, its high fiber content can actually help slow down how sugar is absorbed in the body. That’s one reason it’s often added to smoothies — you get a whole pack of nutrients without the sugar rush.
Baobab Smoothie With Ginger
EQUIPMENT
- 1 blender
INGREDIENTS
- 3 tbsp baobab powder
- 1 tbsp ginger
- 2 cups yogurt
- 1 orange
- 1 mango
- 1 banana
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp turmeric
INSTRUCTIONS
- Begin with the ginger. Use the edge of a spoon to scrape away the skin — it’s quicker and wastes less than cutting. Once peeled, grate it finely so it blends smoothly into the drink without leaving any fibrous pieces.
- Move on to the fruit. Peel the orange, banana, and mango, then slice them into chunks. Drop the fruit into the blender, add the yogurt, drizzle in the honey, and finish with a pinch of turmeric.
- Blend everything on high until the mixture is creamy and lump-free. Give it a quick taste; if you’d like it sweeter, add a little more honey and blend again until smooth (and delicious looking).
- Pour your baobab smoothie into glasses and serve right away for the freshest flavor. This recipe makes two generous servings.
